Ban spotlights threat of alien species to global ecosystems on International Day

The spread of non-native species is harming ecosystems, livelihoods and economies around the world, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a message to mark the International Day for Biological Diversity.

Mr. Ban said the global decline in biodiversity “remains alarming, despite agreement at the (2002) World Summit on Sustainable Development to significantly reduce the rate of loss by 2010,” citing deforestation, habitat changes and land degradation, often linked to climate change's growing impact, as the main drivers of biodiversity loss.

But another threat – and the focus of this year's observance of this year's International Day – is the spread of invasive alien species, he said.

UN Chief calls for greater efforts to eradicate malaria on international day

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the international community to redouble its efforts to ensure that every person at risk of catching malaria has access to a mosquito net by 2010, in a message marking World Malaria Day.

Although more than 40 per cent of people in danger of dying from the disease now have mosquito nets and malaria deaths have been slashed by two-thirds, there is much more work to do in providing access to key malaria prevention tools and treatment to those suffering from the disease, stressed Mr. Ban.

Urging world to disarm, Ban kicks off countdown to UN Day

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched the “WMD-WeMustDisarm” campaign, beginning the 100-day countdown to the 2009 United Nations International Day of Peace, which this year focuses on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

Over the next 100 days leading up to the International Day, observed annually on 21 September, Mr. Ban and others will raise awareness of the need to eliminate nuclear weapons by issuing a daily message, via Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, email and radio, urging the world to disarm.

The Secretary-General is taking the lead by issuing the first 10 'tweets' of the campaign.

“Over the next 100 days, the United Nations and our partners around the world will work to raise awareness of the true costs and dangers of nuclear weapons,” Mr. Ban said in a message to mark the .

Desertification poses security risks, Ban warns on World Day
